What is a MRI Scan?

An MRI scan, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a painless and non-invasive test that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation.

During the scan, you will lie still on a table that slides into a large, tube-shaped machine. The machine then takes pictures of your organs, tissues, and bones from different angles. An MRI is especially useful for examining the brain, spine, joints, and soft tissues, helping our clinicians diagnose and monitor various medical conditions with high accuracy.

What does a MRI Scan diagnose

The Wilson Polyclinic use MRI scans to diagnose and provide detailed information about a wide range of medical conditions including:

MRI is essential for detecting tumors, multiple sclerosis, aneurysms, and spinal cord injuries.
It helps diagnose conditions such as torn ligaments, cartilage damage, and other joint abnormalities.
MRI can assess heart structures, detect congenital heart defects, and evaluate damage from heart attacks.
It’s useful for identifying liver diseases, kidney abnormalities, and ovarian or uterine conditions.
MRI can locate and stage various cancers, including those of the brain, breast, prostate, and other soft tissues.

MRI scans are generally very safe, but there are a few risks and considerations to keep in mind:

  • Metal Implants: People with certain metal implants, such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, or some types of aneurysm clips, may not be able to have an MRI due to the strong magnetic fields.
  • Claustrophobia: Some patients may feel anxious or claustrophobic inside the MRI machine. Open MRI machines or sedatives can help alleviate this discomfort.
  • Contrast Dye Reactions: If contrast dye is used to enhance images, there is a small risk of an allergic reaction. It’s important to inform your doctor of any allergies or kidney issues beforehand.
  • Pregnancy: While MRI is considered safe during pregnancy, contrast dye is typically avoided unless necessary.
  • Noise: The MRI machine can be quite loud, but earplugs or headphones are usually provided to reduce discomfort.
